Germany’s Energy Storage Systems Continue Rapid Expansion

19 September 2025

The number of energy storage systems in Germany continues to rise. According to the Institute for Renewable Energy (IWR), citing the Bundesnetzagentur registry, by the end of July 2025 the total number of battery storage systems in the country exceeded 2 million. Their combined power capacity reached approximately 14 GW, with a total energy capacity of 22.5 GWh.

The 100,000th storage system in Germany was installed in 2018. In the first seven months of 2025, more than 318,000 new systems were deployed, adding a total capacity of 2,088 MW and an energy capacity of 3,868 MWh.

Among federal states, North Rhine-Westphalia, Bavaria, and Baden-Württemberg lead in the number of new installations.

Germany now has over 5 million solar power systems, which cover around 15% of the country’s total electricity consumption. Most new residential solar installations are now equipped with battery storage systems.

According to IWR’s forecast, around 550,000 new storage systems are expected to be installed in 2025. By the end of the year, the total number of systems is projected to reach approximately 2.3 million, with a combined power capacity of 16 GW and an energy capacity of 25 GWh. The continued decline in battery prices is expected to further drive market growth.

Comment from the Investment Division of M24 SunShine:

Despite the impressive growth in the number of energy storage systems, the German storage market still depends heavily on subsidies and equipment price fluctuations. The deployment of over 300,000 new installations within seven months creates additional load on grid infrastructure, especially in leading regions. Without parallel development of smart energy management and demand-supply balancing, the efficiency of these systems may remain limited. Widespread integration of home solar-plus-storage setups does not yet guarantee economic sustainability without further policy support.
