China Builds Giant Hybrid Solar Project: PV and Thermal Power

28 January 2025

China Datang Corporation is building an ambitious 1 GW solar project that combines photovoltaic (PV) and solar thermal (CSP) generation. The project, located in China, will be one of the world’s largest hybrid solar facilities.

Project Key Features

PV:

  • Capacity: 900 MW.
  • Modules Used: TOPCon ASTRO N5 from Astronergy.
  • Solar Thermal (CSP): Capacity – 100 MW.
  • Technology: Linear Fresnel Lenses.
  • Energy Storage: 8 hours using molten salt.
  • Functions: base load provision & frequency regulation and peak smoothing.
  • Total Generation: the facility is expected to generate 2.19 billion kWh per year when fully operational in 2025.

Benefits of a hybrid approach

  1. 24-Hour Generation: PV operates during the day, while thermal power provides power at night or during peak periods.
  2. Grid Stability: CSP helps regulate frequency and smooth out peaks, which improves grid reliability.
  3. Resource Efficiency: the combination of PV and CSP allows for maximum use of solar energy.

Context: Solar Thermal Power (CSP)

In the first decade of the 21st century, CSP was seen as a promising technology that could compete with PV generation. However, today, CSP is inferior to PV in terms of cost efficiency, which limits its adoption. However, CSP retains its advantages in hybrid projects where energy storage and stable generation are required.

Other CSP project examples

  • Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park (UAE): the world’s largest solar thermal power plant with a capacity of 700 MW.
  • Part of a solar park with a total capacity of 5 GW (PV + CSP).
  • Implemented with the participation of the Saudi company ACWA Power.

Other projects in China and the world:

Despite its limited adoption, CSP continues to be used in hybrid projects that require long-term energy storage.

CSP Prospects

  • Niche Applications: CSP is unlikely to become a mass technology, but will retain its role in hybrid projects and regions with high insolation.
  • Technological Innovations: Improved efficiency and reduced cost of CSP can increase its competitiveness.

Conclusion

The China Datang Corporation project demonstrates how a hybrid approach can combine the advantages of PV and solar thermal generation. This not only improves the efficiency of solar energy, but also ensures the stability of the power grid.

Although CSP is lagging behind PV in terms of development, its role in hybrid projects and energy storage systems remains important. This project is another step towards China’s leadership in the field of renewable energy.
