Apollo Global Management Is In talks To Acquire A Stake In The Spanish Football Club Atlético Madrid

16 September 2025

According to the Financial Times, the negotiations involve Apollo’s potential participation in financing a large-scale development project related to the club’s infrastructure.

The project, named Ciudad del Deporte, aims to develop the area surrounding the Wanda Metropolitano stadium. The total investment is estimated at around €800 million. Financing is expected to be split between private investors and the club itself.

Atlético Madrid plans to raise approximately €555 million from external investors via Parque Metropolitano, a structure created specifically for the project’s implementation. The remaining expenses will be covered by the club’s own funds and future revenues from operating the new facilities.

Previously, Ares Management invested €182 million in exchange for a 34% stake in Atlético’s holding structure. Based on current estimates, Atlético Madrid is valued at around €1.9 billion.

Negotiations with Apollo are still at an early stage, and no formal offers have been made. Options under discussion include both direct investment and the potential issuance of new shares to finance construction.

According to the Financial Times, the Ciudad del Deporte project is viewed by the club as a long-term strategy for developing both commercial and sports facilities, including hotels, residential complexes, training bases, and retail infrastructure. Decisions regarding the terms of collaboration are expected in the coming months.

Comment from the Investment Division of M24 SunShine:

Apollo’s negotiations to invest in Atlético Madrid’s project appear ambitious, but the risks remain high. The project’s €800 million scale requires clear financial structuring, while reliance on the club’s future revenues may lead to additional debt exposure. Moreover, the absence of finalized deal terms adds uncertainty. The project’s success will depend on the club’s ability to monetize the infrastructure and secure stable streams of tenants and visitors.
