ArcelorMittal Delays Plans to Decarbonise Steel Production in Europe

Economic challenges put green steel on hold

Steel giant ArcelorMittal has announced a delay in its plans to decarbonise its European operations. The original plans included replacing blast furnaces with direct reduced iron furnaces, which would significantly reduce CO2 emissions.

The company explained that the decision was due to deteriorating market conditions, including high energy costs and slowing economic growth. These factors have forced ArcelorMittal to temporarily focus on maintaining the stability of its current production.

The delay has raised concerns among environmentalists as it slows progress in reducing the carbon footprint of the steel industry, which remains one of the largest emitters of CO₂ in Europe.
