China Begins Construction of 100% Renewable Energy Microgrid

6 January 2025

A microgrid powered entirely by renewable energy has begun construction in China to power a mobile operator’s data center.

The project, located in Golmud, Qinghai Province, includes a 122 MW solar power plant with 75 MW/300 MWh energy storage systems and a data center. The power generation is provided by IBC monocrystalline bifacial solar modules developed by the State Power Investment Corporation of China (SPIC).

The power plant will supply 126 million kWh of electricity to the data center annually. This will reduce the consumption of standard coal by 42,100 tons and reduce CO₂ emissions by 115,500 tons per year.

The location of the facility in a desert area ensures the efficient use of low-quality land and partially contributes to its reclamation. The project demonstrates the possibilities of clean technologies and sustainable development.
