China Launches First Integrated Solar-Hydrogen Project

15 January 2025

Chinese energy company CHN Energy has taken a major step forward in green energy development by implementing the country’s first integrated project integrating solar power generation, hydrogen production, energy storage and environmental management. The large-scale project, located on the tidal coast in Rudong County, Jiangsu Province, was connected to the grid on 31 December 2024.

Main components of the project

Solar power plant:

  • Installed capacity: 400 MW.
  • Area: 287 hectares.
  • Expected annual output: 468 million kWh (equivalent to saving 151,000 tons of standard coal per year).

Hydrogen production:

  • Capacity: 1,500 standard cubic meters per hour.
  • Hydrogen refueling: 500 kg of hydrogen per day.

Energy Storage:

  • Capacity: 60 MW.
  • Capacity: 120 MWh.

Environmental Management:
The project includes measures to restore and protect the coastal ecosystem.

Project Significance

Integration of Technologies:
The project combines several key areas of green energy: solar generation, hydrogen production and energy storage. This allows for the efficient use of resources and minimization of losses.

Environmental Effect:
Reduction of CO₂ emissions by 151,000 tons per year.
Support for the coastal ecosystem.

Hydrogen Energy Development:
The production and use of hydrogen is an important step in the decarbonization of industry and transport.

Pilot Project:
This facility will serve as a model for future integrated projects in China and other countries.

Technical Features

  • 220 kV Substation: Provides efficient connection to the power grid.
  • Energy Storage: Addresses the problem of solar power generation instability by storing excess energy for use during peak periods.
  • Hydrogen Infrastructure: Hydrogen produced using solar energy can be used to fuel vehicles or in industrial processes.

Outlook

Once fully operational in 2025, the project will be an important part of China’s energy infrastructure. It will not only provide clean energy, but also demonstrate the ability to integrate different technologies to achieve climate goals.

Conclusion

As China continues to strengthen its position in the field of green energy, this project is not just a technical achievement, but also an important step towards a sustainable future. It shows that the combination of solar power, hydrogen and storage can be the key to decarbonizing the economy.
