India Has Started Building Alkaline Electrolyser Plant

27 February 2025

Waaree, India’s largest solar panel manufacturer, has begun construction of an alkaline electrolyser plant in Valsad, Gujarat. The plant will have an annual capacity of 300 MW. The electrolysers are designed for use in the steel, refining, transport, chemical, food, fertilizer and power industries. The plant will have automated assembly lines to ensure accuracy and scalability of production.

The project is part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, announced by the Government of India in August 2021. The mission aims to achieve the production of 5 million tonnes of green hydrogen by 2030. The Green Hydrogen/Green Ammonia Policy was released in February 2022. The mission has a Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) programme, which provides subsidies for the production of electrolysers and green hydrogen. Waaree has received subsidies for the production of 300 MW of electrolyzers and for the production of 90,000 metric tons of green hydrogen per annum.

The company has a solar module manufacturing capacity of 13.3 GW in India and 3 GW in the US.
In addition to the electrolyzer project, Waaree Energies Limited has started production at a new 1,400 MW monocrystalline PERC solar cell manufacturing facility in Chikli, Gujarat. The facility is planned to be expanded to 5,400 MW.
