Wind Energy Continues To Grow In Europe

12 March 2025

Wind energy continues to grow in Europe, although the rate of new capacity additions in 2024 is slightly slower than in previous years, according to WindEurope. Here are the key points from the report:

New capacity additions

Europe added 16.4 GW of new wind capacity in 2024, of which 84% was onshore.
The EU added 12.9 GW, less than half of what is needed to meet energy security targets.

Installed capacity

Total wind capacity in Europe reached 285 GW (248 GW onshore and 37 GW offshore).
The EU27 had 231 GW of installed capacity (210 GW onshore, 21 GW offshore).

Leaders in capacity growth

Germany added 4 GW, becoming the leader in growth.
The UK took second place with 2 GW.

Leading countries in installed capacity

  • Germany – 72.7 GW (onshore and offshore wind farms).
  • The UK – 31.6 GW.
  • Spain – 31.2 GW.

Offshore wind power

The UK leads with 15.9 GW.
Germany is in second place with 9.1 GW.

Share of wind power in generation

In Europe, the share of wind in electricity production reached 20%, in the EU – 19%.
Leaders in the share of wind in generation: Denmark (56%), Ireland (33%), Sweden (31%).

Norway:
Installed wind power capacity – 5.2 GW.
Wind power accounts for 11% of electricity generation.

Future plans

WindEurope expects 186 GW of new capacity to be installed in Europe between 2025 and 2030, including 139 GW in the EU. However, to realize these plans, permitting needs to be accelerated and the grid needs to be expanded.

Technical indicators

Capacity factor (CFU) in 2024:

  • Onshore wind farms – 23%.
  • Offshore wind farms – 35%.

Average capacity per turbine:

  • Onshore – 4.6 MW.
  • Offshore – 10.1 MW.

Thus, wind energy remains a key area for Europe to achieve climate goals and energy security, but measures to simplify administrative procedures and modernize infrastructure are needed to accelerate development.
