Wind Power: A New Leader

17 January 2025

Wind power became the largest source of electricity in the UK in 2024, overtaking gas generation. This was made possible by:

  • Increasing installed capacity: Both onshore and offshore wind farms are being actively built in the country.
  • Favourable weather conditions: December 2024 was a record month, when wind provided 38.9% of generation.
  • Clean energy sources: more than half of generation
In 2024, 58% of the UK’s electricity was generated from clean sources, including:
  • Nuclear power (14%): Despite having no CO₂ emissions, nuclear power in the UK has been slow to develop due to the high cost of building new reactors.
  • Other renewables (13.8%): Solar power, biomass and hydropower continue to play an important role in the country’s energy mix.
  • Gas generation: a decline in share. Long the UK’s main source of electricity, gas generation produced 26.3% of electricity in 2024. This decline is due to the growing share of renewable energy sources and the country’s desire to reduce CO₂ emissions.

Energy transition: challenges and prospects

Infrastructure: To further increase the share of renewable energy sources, it is necessary to develop energy storage systems and modernize the electricity grid.

Electricity imports: The UK continues to import electricity, which highlights the need to develop its own generation.

Nuclear power: Its role remains important, but requires significant investment.

Conclusion

2024 was a landmark year for the UK’s energy sector. Wind power took first place for the first time, and the share of clean energy sources exceeded 50%. This demonstrates that the country is confidently moving towards its climate goals.

However, there is still much work to do: developing infrastructure, investing in energy storage and supporting new technologies. The UK is showing that the energy transition is not a utopia, but a reality that is already changing the world.
